Sofia Pagliarin

I am an Assistant Professor (‘Akademischer Rat’) at the Chair for the Governance of Innovative and Complex Technological Systems. I am an enthusiastic urban sociologist interested in cities and regions’ environment and planning, and in qualitative and comparative research methods. I have obtained my double doctoral degree in urban studies from Bicocca University of Milan (Italy) and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) in 2014 (co-tutorship). Between 2016 and 2017 I worked as a post-doc researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) near Zurich. I have been a visiting post-doctoral researcher at the Chair of Governance of Innovative and Complex Technological Systems at University of Bamberg (Germany) before starting this position as Assistant Professor. Before working in academia, I worked as an employee in logistics in different companies in Italy and Spain. I also lived in Sweden and Turkey.

My main research interests and expertise are related to:

– urban sprawl and landscape transformations
– complexity informed perspectives and methods to study urban change
– territorial governance
– spatial planning systems and strategic spatial planning
– qualitative and set-theoretic comparative methods for the social sciences (qualitative
comparative analysis QCA as applied to urban environments)
